♋ Cancer Mythology

Cancer was a crab that was sent by the goddess, Hera, to help Hydra, a water demon, attack Hercules in one of his 12 labours through the underworld. Hercules defeated the crab and Hera made it a constellation of stars to thank it for its loyalty.

The theme of the underworld is also seen in Babylonian astrology mythology. It represented the gate to the underworld and was connected with death.

It is said that the ocean is the primordial source of life, the mother, if you will. We came from the ocean millions of years ago as microscopic crustacean-like creatures, and so Cancer represents where we come from, our ancestors and family roots.

Just as a crab can walk on both land and sea, when we are born we pass from the waters of our mothers' womb to life and the earth. Cancer rules the liminal space between these two, and the mysteries of life.

Cancer is usually represented by a water creature or a creature with an exoskeleton, giving it the symbolism of protection. Underneath the shell is a soft underbelly. For example, in Egyptian mythology, the sign was a scarab beetle, and in Babylon it was a crab or turtle. Latin references make it a crayfish and there are Germanic references of it being a lobster.
