Leo Mythology

In Greek mythology, Leo is the Nemean Lion, one of the opponents of Heracles' (Hercules in Roman) 12 labours. The Nemean Lion was a fierce and infallible foe that couldn't be harmed by traditional weapons, so Heracles wrestled it with his bare hands and won. Zeus placed the lion in the sky as a constellation to honour its courage and strength.

In ancient Babylon, the constellation of Leo was known as Urgula, meaning "the great lion" and the fixed star, Regulus, located at the lion's breast, was a sign of royalty.#

In ancient Egypt, lions hold great significance and are connected with the Goddess Sekhmet. She is a warrior goddess and a fertility goddess who protects those who worship her.

The Great Sphinx of Egypt has the body of a lion and connections with the fixed star Regulus and the constellation of Leo. Some alternative Egyptologists suggest it was built to line up with the sunrise on the spring equinox some 12,000 years ago. Other suggest that it is a giant astronomical clock which measures the ages (one complete rotation on the earth's axis, aka "precession"). Either way, the Egyptians clearly had a great connection with Leo!
