♐ Sagittarius Mythology
In Greek mythology, there are differing tales as to who the constellation of Sagittarius immortalises.
The most common but least probable, is that Sagittarius is the Centaur, Chiron, who was half horse, half man, and a great teacher of medicine, ethics and spirituality.
The story goes that Chiron gave his life for Prometheus and took a poisoned arrow for him, but since Chiron is immortal, he couldn't die, so he carried this never healing wound forever. This is where the nickname "wounded healer" comes from.
Zeus, king of the gods, was impressed by Chiron's generosity and immortalised him as the constellation, Sagittarius.
However, we already have a Chiron in astrology! So, for this and other reasons, I personally prefer the second myth.
Ceres and Pan by Peter Paul Reubens
The second Greek myth is that the constellation of Sagittarius is the satyr, Crotus, son of Pan, the good-humoured god of music, shepherds and mountain wilds. Crotus was the inventor of archery, which is very fitting for Sagittarius!
A satyr is a nature spirit with the legs of a horse. They were wild and jovial, dancing and partying as the companion of the god Dionysus, who is decidedly Sagittarian in nature.
The muses were also closely related and since there are SO many Sagittarian popstars and rockstars, personally I prefer this second myth.
However, before the Greeks there was the Sumerians, who had their own similar mythology for the constellation of Sagittarius.
The Sumerians listed Sagittarius as one of their main constellations in the Babylonian Star Catalogues. They called it PA.BIL.SAG, and connected it to the winged centaur and god of hunting and war.
In astronomy, the constellation of Sagittarius contains the part of the Milky Way known as the "Galactic Centre" – the literal centre of the universe? This is another fascinating addition to our understanding of this sign as being the philosophical adventurer, searching the skies and within for meaning.
