Scorpio Mythology

The Greek mythology states that the constellation of Scorpio is about Orion, the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Orion was said to be the most handsome man on earth, and went hunting with goddess, Artemis. Her brother, Apollo was jealous and sent a giant scorpion to kill him.

Zeus, the king of the gods, placed both Orion and the scorpion (who was just fulfilling his duty) in the sky as the constellation Scorpio.

Scorpio season is also associated with Hades or Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld. Themes of death, decay and rebirth go hand in hand with this season and the one who rules over lost souls.

The brightest star in the constellation of Scorpio is Antares, nicknamed "the heart of the scorpion". It is a bright red star and rivals Mars in looks. In astrology, it represents war, passion and power.

In Sumerian mythology, Antares and Scorpio are related to underworld dark goddess of love, Ishara. Antares is said to be her flaming heart.

The ancient Egyptians associated Antares and Scorpio with Serket, the scorpion-headed goddess of protection. The scorpion would lead souls towards the underworld and was a resilient and powerful guide.

During Scorpio season we celebrate Samahin/Halloween, and the thinning of the veil between us, the living, and the underworld of the dead.

At this time, we penetrate our own darkness and investigate how our defences might block us from love. Let go of all our ghosts. Celebrate our ancestors.

Lift the veil that protects our burning heart and fulfil the ache that longs for a love of substance, something we can trust, get our teeth into – so Scorpio!
